Chapter 3: The Letters from No One
Harry Potter has lived with the Dursley's for 10 years now. Despite the Dursley's love for all things "normal," they routinely abuse Harry. He sleeps in a cupboard under the stairs, wears Dudley's old clothes that are too big for him, is bullied by Dudley and his friends and is occasionally locked in his cupboard with no food as punishment.
A boy who has grown up with nothing to call his own, suddenly gets his very first letter! Much to his disappointment, his uncle Vernon takes it away from him. Harry is devastated. However, the letters keep coming. The Dursley's reaction to the letters that keep coming show us just how far from normal the Dursley's really are. Their reaction to the letters also shows just how desperate they are to escape the truth that Harry is a wizard.
The Dursley's remained in denial for 10 years. They know the truth but pretend not to. Sometimes people will hide things that are difficult or embarrassing because they want to appear normal.
